What to wear for adult ballet class?
by Discount Dance | Posted on Mar. 7th 2025

Attending your first adult ballet class is an exciting step, and choosing the right attire can help you feel confident and comfortable. Traditionally, many dancers opt for a long sleeve black leotard paired with pink tights. This classic look allows your instructor to see your alignment and helps you appreciate your lines. However, if you're more comfortable in darker colors, black tights or black leggings worn over a black leotard are also perfectly acceptable.

Adding a pair of loose warm-up shorts or a skirt with a bit of coverage are also great options. Layering a cozy, fitted sweater on top will keep your muscles warm between exercises and can be easily removed once you're in full swing.

Ballet shoes are probably the most important component of your outfit. Capezio split sole canvas ballet slippers are a popular choice for many adult beginners because the canvas molds to your foot for a snug fit, while the split sole design provides flexibility and prevents unwanted bunching. These details go a long way in helping you feel more secure and supported during tendus and relevés.

If you ever feel uncertain about what to wear, remember to check your studio's dress code guidelines. Above all, select pieces that make you feel good and allow you to focus on refining your ballet technique.
